As a member of the National Registry’s examiner roster, you’re responsible for conducting DOT physicals that determine whether drivers meet Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration standards for safe operation of commercial vehicles. You’ll focus on several key areas:
Conducting Comprehensive Examinations
The primary duty of an NRCME examiner is to perform thorough DOT physical exams on CMV drivers. These examinations are designed to evaluate the driver’s overall health and identify any medical conditions that might impair their ability to operate a commercial vehicle safely.
Understand FMCSA
Regulations
You must have an in-depth knowledge of FMCSA medical standards, lab values and other guidelines. This knowledge is essential in making informed decisions about a driver’s medical fitness and ensuring compliance with federal regulations.
Issue Medical Certificates
After conducting the physical exam, you will be responsible for issuing a Medical Examiner’s Certificate (DOT medical card) to drivers who meet the necessary requirements. This certificate is valid for up to 24 months and is mandatory for CMV drivers.
