DOT Medical Certification Requirements

Find Out If You’re Qualified and How to Register for the Exam

Before you are able to start the process of becoming a Department of Transportation certified medical examiner, you must first meet certain criteria, as required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Here’s an easy-to-absorb overview of the necessary qualifications and steps you must take to prepare for the FMCSA medical examiner certification test.

Person registering

Professional Requirements

Medical examiners must be licensed, certified or registered as an advanced practice nurse (RN, NP, etc.), doctor of chiropractic (DC), doctor of medicine (MD), doctor of osteopathy (DO), or physician assistant (PA).

Training

Before registering for the NRCME certification exam, clinicians must complete a NRCME training course on the FMCSA physical qualification standards, guidance and related knowledge for CMV drivers.

The training program you choose must:

  • Be accredited by a nationally recognized medical profession accrediting organization
  • Cover the 8 content areas outlined in the FMCSA’s core curriculum specifications
  • Provide you with a certificate of completion

Registering for the NRCME Certification Exam

Once you’ve completed your NRCME training program, there are a few more steps to go:

1

Create Your Account.

If you haven’t already, visit National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners to create your account and accept the Rules of Behavior.

If you’re recertifying or have already created an account, simply login.

2

Upload Your Certificate.

Once you are logged in to your account, add your training completion certificate under “My Certification and Training”.

3

Schedule Your Exam.

PSI and Prometric are the two approved test administrators. Call or go online to schedule your in-person exam. They each have multiple locations, but dates may be limited, so schedule 1-2 weeks in advance. Cost is approximately $80.

You will need your National Registry Number to schedule your test.

4

Maintain Your Listing.

You will need to maintain your DOT medical examiners certificate by reviewing FMCSA-provided refresher material every 5 years and completing your recertification every 10 years.
